Organization of Seminars and Symposia

Since 1998, we have held the symposium titled "Prevention of Climate Change Led by Citizens" in Kyoto every December. In this symposium, we have reported the latest information about international negotiations and domestic measures about climate change. We have held various sub-meetings on more specific topics such as: the promotion of energy, regional measures towards the prevention of climate change, fluorinated gases, forestry and so on. They have enabled us to expand our networks and share the latest information about the various regions. Every year, several hundreds people participate in this symposium. They maintain the "spirit" at the time of COP3 and have fruitful discussions in every event.

We also have held the "Public Seminar Series" once a month in Kyoto. Each time, a different topic is chosen, and experts are invited infields such as: renewable energy, international negotiations, and taxation and finance. We have held this public seminar series more than 30 times. We also have held the study meeting series on "Hot Talk Now!? Climate Change" in Tokyo.

Operation of Environmental Education by Cooperation

Encouraging environmental education through collaboration since 1999, we have organized the "Renewable Energy School - Kyoto" with other NGOs and the fourth year of students have already graduated. Those who graduated have continued on to become teachers of the following year or they have organized renewable energy schools in their own regions. Some of them began advanced activities such as designing power plants based on citizen cooperation. Graduates are maintaining partnerships through their mailing list and are pursuing their goals of becoming active citizens and developing a network of renewable energy.

The Nation-Wide Campaign Using the Network

We conducted a campaign called, "CHANGE! Campaign for Environmental Era" that involved members of Kiko Network as well as citizens and civil groups in collaboration. More than 150 events were aimed at the resumed session of COP6 in 2001 thanks to the support of 215 groups across the country.

We encouraged local assemblies to adopt statements demanding the early ratification of the Kyoto Protocol. 157 local assemblies responded to us and sent their statements to the government. Moreover, we received more than 5000 messages from public as the voices of citizens asking for the prevention of climate change and for early implementation of the Kyoto Protocol. All of the messages were sent to the resumed session of COP6. We also cooperated with about 50 organizations across the country to carry out surveys to the candidates to the member of House of the Councilors regarding their policies on energy and climate change. We provided the result of the surveys to voters to give them their candidatesユ environmental opinions.
